According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia attacked Ukraine from the air using drones built in Iran as well as cruise and hypersonic missiles. It said that throughout the course of many waves from Saturday night to Sunday morning, the enemy "used 70 air assault weapons in total."
"Unfortunately, civilians are also suffering casualties and injuries. Residential structures and other civic infrastructure were destroyed," the statement continued.
According to the Ukrainian air force, 30 of the 40 cruise missiles and all of the Shahed drones were destroyed. The missiles that managed to breach air defences did not specifically mention which facilities they impacted.
The Ukrainian armed forces airbases near the communities of Starokostiantyniv in the Khmelnytskyi district and Dubno in the Rivne region were assaulted, according to the Russian army. In the meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian bomb strike on a blood transfusion facility in the city of Kupiansk in the eastern Kharkiv area resulted in at least two fatalities and four injuries.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, praised the West for its military assistance and said that air defence systems provided by the US and Germany are having a "significant" impact on Kyiv's forces. These include the German IRIS-T and the Patriot developed by the US.
On Sunday, when Ukraine struck two bridges on its seized territory, Russian air defences were also in action. Kiev's military allegedly launched a missile assault close to the Chonhar Bridge, destroying the flyover that connects southern Ukraine to the Crimean peninsula that Russia has taken.
Near the town of Henichesk in the Kherson area, another Ukrainian attack on one of the three road connections between Crimea and the Russian-occupied portions of mainland Ukraine injured a civilian and damaged a gas pipeline, according to authorities deployed by Moscow. After Ukrainian forces bombarded a university there, one civilian death was reported in the area of Donetsk that is under Russian control.
