The transformed part of a flowering plant that reproduces by producing fruits and seeds is called a flower. Flowers grow at the top of the trunk and branches. Flowers are known to be the most visually pleasing parts of plants. All flowering plants produce flowers and they help in plant reproduction. Some of the biological functions of flowers are to facilitate reproduction, usually by providing a mechanism for the fertilization of the egg and sperm. Pollination is of two types, namely: self-pollination and cross-pollination. Self-pollination occurs when pollen from an anther is deposited on another flower of the same flowering plant. On the other hand, cross pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of one flower to the calyx of another flower on a different plant of the same species. Self-pollination occurs between flowers. The stamens and carpels mature at the same time and are positioned so that the pollen can land on the calyx. Some flowers can produce diaspores without fertilization (parthenocarpy).
