Every year, a non-governmental organization in the United States called Freedom House develops a measure of democracy on a scale of 100 composite indices by country and region with global political rights (10 major variables) and civil rights (15 major variables). The survey of 212 countries and regions conducted in 2019 has been divided into three parts of a scale to determine the position of each country.There are three divisions, 1. Free, 2. Partially free, 3. Such a country is not free. Bangladesh is ranked 39th out of 100 and is part of Qatar.

A score below 75 means 'partially free' and a score below 30 means 'not free'. In the analysis of 2019, out of 212 countries in the world, 42.6 percent, 32.3 percent and 25.1 percent countries have been included in the list of free, partially free and not free countries respectively.Among the South Asian regions, India scored 71, Bhutan 57, Nepal 57, Sri Lanka 55, Bangladesh 39, Pakistan 38 and Myanmar 30. Everyone except India is listed here as a partially free country. Indian Kashmir has been listed separately as 'Not Free'. Finland, Norway, Sweden, etc. are at the top of the list with a score of 100 and some countries like Saudi Arabia (Score-6) are at the bottom.The Freedom House Report 2020 highlights the declining demographic indicators in six countries around the world over the past decade, especially in the United States and India.

Two more important internationally recognized indicators need to be mentioned along with the Freedom House Index.The first could be the Global Knowledge Index-2020 compiled by UNDP and the Mohammed Bin Rashid R-Maktum Foundation, and the second by Transparency International's (TI) Corruption Perceptions Index-2020. Our position is 112 out of 137 countries in the knowledge index. Our position is at the bottom of the list of six countries in South Asia. Out of 100 numbers in the knowledge index, our score is 35.9, equal to Pakistan.Other countries in the region, such as India (61.4%), Sri Lanka (7th) (42.1%), Bhutan (40.9%) and Nepal (37.2%).
