সৌন্দর্য প্রিয় মানুষদের বহন করে নিয়ে একটি জাহাজ চলেছে সঙ্গে চলেছে গঙ্গা কবুতরের দল। সবাই এই অপূর্ব সুন্দর দৃশ্য দেখে মুগ্ধ। দূর থেকে দেখে মনে হচ্ছে সমুদ্রের মাছ থেকে বেশি আছে সবুজ এক টুকরা দ্বীপ। জায়গাটি চোখে পড়তেই উৎফুল্ল হয়ে উঠেছে সবাই। ছেলে-বুড়ো সকলের মাঝে এক আনন্দের আভাস ওই দেখা যায় সেই আনন্দ সমুদ্রের আধার প্রবাল দ্বীপ "সেন্ট মার্টিন"।

 

জাহাজটি দ্বীপের জেঠির কাছে ভিড়তেই পর্যটকদের উত্তেজনা যেন একেবারে চরম শিখরে পৌঁছে গেছে। হোটেলে তল্পিতল্পা রাখতে দেরি কিন্তু দিক দর্শনের বেরোতে একটু অভিলম্ব নেই। কেউ কেউ তো লোভ সামলাতেই পারেনা। নেমে পড়েছে সাগরে। বিষয়টা এই পর্যটকদের কাছে ঠিক কক্সবাজারের নিরীহ সেই সমুদ্রের তীরের মতো। কেউ কল্পনাও করতে পারছে না যে এই সুন্দরের মাঝে কত বড় বিপদ ওঁৎপেতে আছে। যারা পানিতে ইতোমধ্যে নেমে পড়েছে এদের একজনের চোখে একটা কৌতুহল জাগলো। মনে হচ্ছে সে ক্ষেত্রে পুরুষের জল টা একটু বেশি নীল। এই কৌশল কে স্পর্শ করে দেখার জন্য কয়েকজন সেই নীল জলরাশি দিকে এগিয়ে গেল আর তাতে বেজে উঠল এক মরন ঘন্টা। জলে হাঙ্গর তিনি এই বিপদ জাতীয় কিছুই দেখা যাচ্ছিলো না। কিন্তু সমুদ্রে আসলেই তিনি সাগরের চেয়েও বিপজ্জনক হয় সমুদ্রের এই নীল পানি। হঠাৎ করে দিয়ে আসলো একটা ছোট্ট পান এবং সেই তো পানির স্রোতে তাদের মধ্য থেকে একজনকে নিয়ে চলে গেল সে চিৎকার করলো কিন্তু তার চিৎকার কেউ শুনতে পেল না। করতে এসেছিল সমুদ্রের মধ্যে অবস্থিত সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের সেই অপরূপ সৌন্দর্য আর হয়তো পরিকল্পনা করেছিল বাড়িতে গিয়ে সবাইকে বলবে কিন্তু কি আর হবে বাড়ি আর ফেরা হলোনা সমুদ্র তলায় তার সমাধি হয়ে গেল তার শরীরের অস্তিত্বকেও পেল না। 

 

 

সেন্টমার্টিনের এই সৌন্দর্য দেখতে এসে উত্তর-পূর্ব দিকের সমুদ্র উপকূলে অনেকজনের প্লান এভাবে এ পর্যন্ত আত্মাহুতি দিয়েছেন। এবং সেই জন্য সেন্টমার্টিনের উত্তর-পূর্ব দিকটি মৃত্যুকূপ নামে পরিচিত। এক পরিসংখ্যানে দেখা গেছে বিগত আট থেকে দশ বছরে সেন্টমার্টিনদ্বীপে উত্তর-পূর্ব দিকে মারা গিয়েছে প্রায় ১৮ জন। এদের মধ্যে ২০১৪ সালে ইউনিভার্সিটির বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ৬ জন বালকের সঙ্গে এই সমাজের নিচে তাদের জীবন বিসর্জন দিয়ে গিয়েছিল। আর একই সময়ে গোটা পৃথিবীতে রিপ কারেন্টে মারা যাওয়া লোকের সংখ্যা ৫০ হাজারের ও বেশি। কিন্তু কী কারণে সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের ওই অংশে মাঝে মাঝে এই দুর্ঘটনা ঘটে বিশেষজ্ঞরা সুস্পষ্ট ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছেন। আসিয়া তো তাই আর কেউ নয় বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলেছেন "উল্টো স্রোত"। শুধু সেন্টমার্টিনের নয় সমুদ্র মারা যাওয়া শতকরা ৮০ ভাগ লোকের মৃত্যুই হয় এই উল্টো স্রোতের কারণে। এটা এমন একটা স্রোত যেটা সমুদ্রতটে পানিতে ধাক্কা খেয়ে জীবন ধারণ করে উল্টো দিকে প্রবাহিত হয় এবং এর সামনে এবার সম্মুখে যদি তখন কোন কিছুর পরেও সে তো সেই বস্তুটিকে গভীর থেকে আরো গভীরে নিয়ে যায়।
