Dale Carnegie was born on November 24, 1888 in Maryville, Missouri, USA. Dale Carnegie is credited with being the Godfather behind the rise of modern-day motivational or self- improvement books. His books "How to win friends and influence people" and "Stop worrying and start living" are still sold in Nilkhet even today. Can a person actually change his condition if he wants to or does it take the whole system to work together?
Why did the self-help or motivation genre rise so much when Dale Carnegie was born, and where are the main criticisms of this genre? Did Dale Carnegie really commit suicide in this last years? I will discuss the whole Dale Carnegie affair in today's post.
What is the history of Motivation Business?
In our society there are two classes: the owner class ( what we call the bourgeoisie class) and the working class (the working class). In her book The Self-help Compulsion, Harvard Professor Beth Blum discusses. How working people were reading manifestos like George Jacob Holyoake's 1857 Self-Help by the People. Laborers held meetings to discuss ways of bettering themselves. Self-Help was popular among professionals till that time. It is still not common to the whole public. From the 1940s to the 60s, in southeastern Nigeria was the center of a burgeoning movement in self-help literature. Titled "How to Avoid Corner Love and Win Good Love From Girls, Money Hard to Get but Easy to Spend", This kind of cheap motivational book. They were sold at market stalls which name The Onitsha Market. The literature was known as Onitsha Market literature. Here's how you can woo a girl, earn more money - all these things were discussed. And books were sold to the public and of course was popular. Self-help's bourgeois movement started. Simply saying, Earning money easily movement.. Then the United States began a new movement called New Thought. New Thought pitched itself as a mind-healing movement that stressed the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction. Books like ' The Secret by Rhonda Byrne ' was a part of it. It was during this time that the self-help genre gradually shifted from working class to capitalist. There is a very important story in this. Samuel Smiles's 1859 Self-Help. He argued that people are responsible for their own failure. Like poverty was the result of personal failures or weaknesses, such as laziness, profligate spending, and excessive drinking. But we now know that these things are not really true. I will explain it a little later. But Samuel Smiles become very popular at that time through his self-help book and became a celebrity. I'm talking about the period between 1850 and 1990. You can see at that time some of the signs that the manifestations of the symptoms we still see in Bangladesh today. Think about the success of Samuel Smiles' self-help motivational book. Charles Dicken's novel "Great Expectations" follows the childhood and young adult years of Pip, a blacksmith's apprentice in a country village. He suddenly comes into a large fortune and he has become rich overnight. The moral theme of Great Expectations is quite simple: affection, loyalty, and conscience are more important than social advancement, wealth, and class. This things matter more than wealth o fame. Samuel, a contemporary of Charles, wrote a book about just opposite. Here's it discussed about making money. Otherwise you are a failure, you are a lazy man. Let's see which book has sold how much. Charles Dicken's Great Expectation sold 3750 copies in its first year. The self-help book sold 20,000 copies in its first year. People at that time did not like the novels of a great writer like Charles Dickens. If you compare it to self-improvement or motivational books. The rise of the self-help industry in the early 20th century has been criticized by popular novelists and writers of the time. Does it seem familiar? Does it? Does it? Absolutely. Isn't this the story of the book fair every year in Bangladesh? How to read, How to write were the names of many books. "The only advice, indeed, that one person needs to give another about reading is to take no advice," Woolf asserted in her essay. Thus the self-help industry was criticized so much by the novelists of that time.
Motivational speakers think of themselves or good people in society?
There are a lot of motivational books but there that try to convince you that. I want to make you better by motivating you. The matter is shown as a noble deed. In fact, the matter is not so noble. Max Weber, in his descriptions of the Spirit of Capitalism, drew on several of Benjamin Franklin's self-help works, the suggestions they make are not for personal improvement but for the overall improvement of a capitalist organization.
Gig Workers Example
Let me give you an example. There is a lot of talk about Gig workers recently. In one of Zomato's ads, someone went to deliver meal to Hrithik Roshan. A gig worker. Gig Worker means Food Delivery Man, who does freelancing work. This guy is delivering food to Hrithik Roshan, he thought he would take pictures. Hrithik Roshan tells him, I'm coming. In the meantime, the man is getting another call, he has to go at that time. He could no longer take photograph with Hrithik Roshan. They tried to show this thing in a positive way but is it really so? Why does this man have to be on the run so much? That's because the company has told him that the more trips you can make all day toady, the more money you will get. And for these reasons many gig workers try to deliver food within 15 minutes or 20 minutes, without eating, driving on the wrong sides. If I explain this metaphor to you - the thing is a lot like this: One is working for you. Working so hard that he can't even move, he's literally crawling. Then you put him in front of the camera and try to show how hard he is working, even if he's in a crawing state. You exploited and put him in that position. Then glorifying him for working in that position. So we don't glorify the system that has a flaw here, the whole blame is imposed on the people. This man has the right to eat. He has the right to take a picture with his favorite celebrity. The motivation industry is not glorifying it. That's why when the motivation industry tells you, you're actually responsible for your own poverty, that's when the property 22 movement in California happened. It was a movement for the rights of gig workers. Drivers of ride sharing companies like Uber. They have to pay them a minimum wage and provide them medical facilities. These were made compulsory for the company.
Judith Butler Implicit Censorship
Let's go to another book example. 7 Habits of highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. A very famous book. Here you are taught to distinguish between reactive and pro-active languages. Like never say. there's nothing I can do. Rather always say, let's look at our alternative. That's just the way I am. Never say that. Use, " I can choose a different approach." Reactive language here refers to the lines from which you are expressing your thoughts in an authentic way. Don't do that... Pro-Active is telling you to fake. You bring it to everyone in a socially acceptable form. So that it does not create monogamy in anyone. At first glance you thought it should actually be done or it's a good thing. But notice it is Criticism. You can't criticize your boss in public, you can't criticize your superiors inside your organization. It's a censorship. You are censoring yourself. Judith Butler named the censorship Implicit Censorship. Faking one's own opinion as socially acceptable language is called productive. Because if you speak against the boss, you will not be promoted. Doing so shuts down the critical voice within an organization. And such an organization is called Silent Organization. Where no one criticizes their own work. Because they themselves have gone into implicit censorship. This is the greater impact of the next big injustice in front of you, you will want to present it in an acceptable way in society so that there is no problem and you are productive yourself. If it spreads to all the people of a state, then this whole nation will become a silent organization. They will no longer speak out against injustice.
What is the story of Dale Carnegie?
There was a Great Depression when Dale Carnegie started his career. When the Great Depression ended in the 1930's, the condition of the people was very bad. They began to think that they were responsible for their misery or poverty. Then they would seek how to actually improve themselves a lot. At that time people like Dale Carnegie appeared before them like angels. Within corporate management, how you can influence the people around you, how you can make other people your friends - these things would have a much greater effect on your promotion. While people like Dale Carnegie are starting to present them systematically, they have become much more popular. Once Dale asked a pupil if he was completely happy. The man said, "Yes." The answer left Carnegie speechless for half a minute. Thinking how a man can completely be happy. Because think of a world where all people are happy. There is no need for people like Dale Carnigie. You do not need to arrange a seminar to motivate. No need to make a YouTube video. Because you are happy in your own position. It's an ominous sign, ominous message for people Dale Carnegie for ages.
A research has been made on the methods that Dale Carnegie talked about Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The researchers debunk the theories canonized in Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People that assuming, you understand someone else's thoughts, feelings, attitude, or mental state is a correct approach to interpersonal insight. The study included an exhaustive series of 25 experiments designed to separate accuracy from egotism. How much you could understand with body expression. Ultimately, the researchers found flaws in there and confirmed gaining perspective directly though conversation is the most accurate approach.
Did Dale Carnegie commit suicide?
There has been a lot of criticism of Dale Carnegie's suicide. Officially speaking, he died on November 1, 1955. An official statement from Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc. stated that he died of Hodgkin's Iymphoma. It was incurable at that, not possible to be treated. His family said he had been ill for many days. But those who believe Dale Carnegie committed suicide say Dale Carnegie was in clinical depression at the time. It was much more impossible to be diagnosed. Because of that he committed suicide. However, there are many doubts as to how true it is. Rahter, it has become an urban legend due to the fact that such a large motivational speaker eventually committed suicide by falling into clinical depression. It's quite fun and interesting to everyone as a story.
I hope you got a light idea of the motivation industry and there are seminars on personal development on what the main goals might be. And are you really only responsible for your own failures? Or does the whole system have a hand behind it?
