Animation is a medium of storytelling that has been captivating audiences for over a century. From the earliest hand-drawn animations to the latest computer-generated masterpieces, animation has evolved to become one of the most versatile and expressive forms of visual art.
Animation is the process of creating the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of still images in rapid succession. The earliest forms of animation were created using a technique known as stop-motion animation, in which objects are moved in small increments between individual frames, creating the illusion of movement when the frames are played back in succession.

One of the earliest examples of animation is the 1906 film "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" by J. Stuart Blackton. In this film, Blackton drew a series of faces on a chalkboard and then erased and redrew them to create the illusion of movement. Another early example is the 1914 cartoon "Gertie the Dinosaur" by Winsor McKay, which featured a stop-motion animated dinosaur that could be controlled by the animator in real time.

As technology advanced, animation techniques also evolved. In the 1930s, the first full-length animated feature film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was released by Walt Disney Animation Studios. This film was created using a technique known as cel animation, in which each frame of the film is created by hand-drawing the characters and backgrounds on transparent celluloid sheets, or cels. This technique allowed for a much higher degree of fluidity and realism in the animation.

After the success of "Snow White," many other studios began to produce their own animated feature films, including Warner Bros. with "Looney Tunes" and MGM with "Tom and Jerry." These cartoons were known for their comedic, slapstick style and introduced many beloved characters that are still popular today.

As technology continued to advance, animators began to experiment with new techniques such as puppet animation, which uses articulated puppets as the animation subject, and cut-out animation, in which flat characters and backgrounds are physically manipulated to create the illusion of movement.

But with the advent of computer animation in the late 20th century, the medium of animation changed dramatically. Computer animation, also called CGI (computer-generated imagery), allows animators to create highly detailed, realistic images that would be impossible to achieve through traditional animation techniques.

One of the first feature films to use computer animation extensively was "Toy Story" (1995) by Pixar Animation Studios. This film utilized state-of-the-art computer technology to create a full-length animated feature that looked like nothing that had come before it. Since then, computer animation has become the standard for animated feature films, with studios such as Pixar, DreamWorks Animation, and Blue Sky Studios producing critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as "Finding Nemo," "Shrek," and "Ice Age."

Computer animation has also found a home in television, with shows such as "The Simpsons" and "South Park" using the medium to tell stories and make commentary on current events in a way that live-action shows simply couldn't.

Apart from entertainment, animation also has a wide array of applications in other fields such as advertisement, education, architectural visualization, product visualization, medical visualization and simulation, video game development, and more. In advertising, animation is used to create compelling and memorable commercials that can grab the attention of viewers and make a lasting impression. In education, animation is used to explain complex subjects in a way that is easy to understand. In architectural visualization, architects use animation to showcase the design of a building or development before it is constructed, allowing clients to envision the final product and make any necessary changes.
