Captain Rohit Sharma and batsman Virat Kohli will be absent from the white-ball segment of India's upcoming tour of South Africa, as announced by the country's cricket board on Thursday.
Both Rohit and Kohli were part of the Indian team that faced a defeat against Australia in the final of the 50-over home World Cup earlier this month.
During Rohit's break, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team in the three-match T20 series, commencing in Durban on December 10. Wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul will assume leadership for the subsequent three one-day internationals, after which Rohit and Kohli will make their return for the two-test series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India stated in a release, "Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested the board for a break from the white-ball leg of the tour."
India has excluded middle-order batter Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara has not been able to make a comeback, signaling a potential end to their international careers. Seamer Mohammed Shami has been included in the test squad for Centurion and Cape Town, subject to passing a fitness test.
