Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is not only the beginning of a new year, but it is also a memorable and instructive time for the Muslim Ummah. The events of Karbala that occurred in this month are one of the most painful, yet powerful symbols of ideals in the history of Islam.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"The best fast after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharram." [Sahih Muslim]
The month of Muharram is called the "month of Allah", which indicates the dignity of this month. In particular, the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) is an important day, the day on which Allah saved many prophets and their ummah.
On the 10th of Muharram in the year 61 AH, a brutal massacre took place in the desert of Karbala, Iraq, where Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), the beloved grandson of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), was martyred along with his family. Imam Hussain (RA) was a symbol of truth and justice against the unjust rule of Yazid. He never compromised with injustice.
"I do not want to create sedition, I want the reform of the Ummah." — Imam Hussain (RA)

Key Lessons of Karbala
- Sacrifice of life for truth: Imam Hussain (RA) proved that life is fleeting; but sacrifice for justice and truth is eternal. He remained steadfast on the truth even in extremely adverse circumstances and sacrificed his life for it.
- Standing against injustice: Compromising with oppression or corruption is forbidden in Islam. The lesson of Karbala is to speak up for justice and stand against injustice, even if it means making great sacrifices.
- Sacrificing family and children for the cause of Islam: Imam Hussain (RA) sacrificed his children, brothers, and other family members for the cause of Islam. This sacrifice is a sign of complete faith and shows that the path of Allah should be valued above all else.
- Renouncing worldly desires and prioritizing the Hereafter: Imam Hussain (RA) did not prioritize the comfort or power of life, but the pleasure of Allah. He ignored worldly interests and prioritized the eternal life of the Hereafter.

Importance of Fasting on the Day of Ashura
The Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted on the day of Ashura and said:
"Fasting on the day of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year." [Sahih Muslim]
However, it is better not to fast only on the 10th, but to fast on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th. The reason for this is to avoid following the Jews and to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) completely.
The Correct Method of Observing Ashura
Although the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) is a matter of deep sorrow, mourning, lamentation, self-harm, etc. on the occasion of Ashura is not permissible in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"He is not one of us who tears his face, tears his clothes, or wails like the days of ignorance."
Karbala is not just a day of weeping—it is a call to wake up, self-criticism, and to stand firm on the path of truth and justice. These holy days of Muharram and Ashura remind us that Islam is not just about prayer and fasting, but also about truth, sacrifice, and courage.
