Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed his enduring gratitude for the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that the lucrative T20 competition has been exceptionally beneficial to his career. Maxwell, at 35, declared his intention to continue participating in the IPL until he is physically unable to do so.
Having debuted in the IPL with Delhi Daredevils in 2012, Maxwell's explosive batting skills caught the eye, leading to him becoming the top-priced player at the auction in the subsequent year. Mumbai Indians secured his services for a hefty $1 million. Following a stint with Punjab, Maxwell returned to Delhi for a season before joining Royal Challengers Bangalore, where his destructive batting style has endeared him to fans.
Maxwell, who recorded his only Test century in India in 2017 and played a crucial role in Australia's recent 50-overs World Cup triumph, emphasized the profound impact the IPL has had on his career. He praised the exposure to international players, coaches, and the learning experiences gained by sharing the dressing room with cricket stalwarts such as AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli during his time with Bangalore.
Reflecting on the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the U.S., Maxwell highlighted the importance of Australian players participating in the IPL to acclimate to similar conditions. He expressed hope that the IPL experience, with its drier and spin-friendly pitches, would be invaluable preparation for the Australian team ahead of the global T20 competition.
Maxwell is set to lead the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League opener against Brisbane at the Gabba on Thursday.
